Get to Know Errol Haye, Manager of IT and Cyber Security
Today, we shine the spotlight on Errol Haye, a valued member of the Activo team since 2006. Errol’s journey within the company has been impressive, starting in network cabling and project management and growing into his current role as Manager of IT and Cyber Security.
As a leader, Errol ensures Activo’s IT services and cybersecurity program align with our business strategies and those of our customers. He guides and supports his dedicated team, ensuring the delivery and maintenance of IT and security solutions that help our customers achieve their business goals effortlessly.
We sat down with Errol to learn more about his career path, his experience at Activo, and what drives his passion for network solutions. Join us as we uncover Errol’s remarkable journey and discover what makes him a core member of our team.
How did you get started at Activo?
I migrated from Jamaica to Canada in 2006.
When I arrived, I was unable to find my preferred job as a manager in network engineering. While searching, I found an opportunity to work as a network cabling specialist with Activo; I applied as I had certification training and experience in structured cabling systems.
I learned through my research while applying that Jim had successfully built another company, sold it, and launched his new company, Activo. As I was restarting my career from scratch, it would be a great opportunity to grow together with this new company.
What inspired you to stay and pursue your career with Activo?
When I started, I learned that Activo implements projects for some of the biggest companies in Canada.
The fast-paced environment is different from my previous work in the public sector – we are always busy. This was intimidating at first, but the staff I worked with when I started was very helpful and caring, willing to assist new employees whenever they got stuck, as new employees often do while they are learning.
During my time at Activo, I’ve been able to pursue a rewarding and exciting career path. I’m very grateful to Activo for the opportunities I’ve had to work on leading and emerging technologies from some of the major manufacturers in the industry.
I’ve had exciting and unique opportunities to learn and explore the various aspects of the business while moving from my initial role as a network cabling specialist to project support specialist, technical support specialist, network engineer, team leader, and now to my current position as a manager.
What do you think sets you apart from others in your field?
During the early days, I learnt how parts of the business work together to ensure satisfactory delivery of technological solutions which brings value to our customer’s businesses. I think it is important to help wherever I can; I’m always willing to learn and help, whether it is to assist in pre-sales or post-sales, support our customers, or collaborate with our various teams and offices. I appreciate the need for us to deliver timely and cost-effective solutions while ensuring customer satisfaction.
To me, customer satisfaction is “the best business strategy of all.”
What advice would you give someone wanting to follow your career path?
Love what you do. When it comes to your job, be willing to help in whatever way you can, and stay open-minded. Take the opportunities you see to learn and grow and be sure to understand your customers’ requirements before you look for a solution.
What is your favourite part of working at Activo?
Guiding my team and collaborating with our group to ensure customer satisfaction experience. I also like that the company is lean and agile and that we work with the comfort and camaraderie of a smaller business, despite all our growth since I joined in 2006.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I enjoy reading, listening to music, watching movies, and playing chess.
I also like sports and enjoy playing cricket, basketball, soccer, and badminton in my free time.
