Get to Know Mei Sun, Senior Billing Analyst
Mei Sun has worked with Activo since 2014 and started her career with us as an intern. She’s worked her way up to her current position today and is an impressive part of our warm environment of employees. We’re proud to say that Mei is the 2022 recipient of the Activo Recognition Program Award.
Mei is a senior billing analyst in Activo’s finance department, working in the invoicing team. She works with customers and our internal team, managing invoices and billing inquiries while coordinating with the rest of the Activo team to analyze project revenues.
We spoke with Mei to gather more insight into her career, her relationship with Activo, and to ask her about her recent award.
Congratulations on your award, Mei – can you tell us about it?
Thank you very much – I was so surprised to receive the award, as only one person receives it every year. When I told my kids, they were so excited and so proud of me!
The Activo Recognition Program Award recognizes the exemplary embodiment of Activo’s key behaviours – accountability, consistency, team, versatility, and overall safety first.
How did you get started at Activo?
Back in 2014, I completed my internship for my accounting and payroll degree at Activo, and I learned a lot of new skills and really came to love the people and the working environment. It made me want to stay – I was eventually offered a permanent position and have been here ever since.
What do you love about your job?
I really enjoy the team that I work with and the work that I get to do. I like the achievement of completing tasks under tight deadlines, working with customers, and learning new skills that I get to do at Activo.
What advice would you give to someone looking to join the Activo team?
Be open to learning new skills in areas you’ve never worked before; it’s smart to challenge yourself, and it will help prepare you for future roles.
I’d also suggest that you don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s better to ask questions and clarify issues than not knowing and making unnecessary mistakes. The people at Activo are really positive and always want to help – there’s no reason to be afraid.
Where would you want to go if you could switch your career path at Activo?
I love my current career and where I am, but if I could choose anywhere else, I would choose the project management department. When I started at Activo, I learnt a lot of my skills in the project management department. I saw a lot of what happens there, and it helped me do my job more effectively.
I’m close with the project managers as our roles interact a lot – we discuss issues and building requests as they come up. So I’d love to work with them to better understand the projects we work on.
What skills do you think every person should learn to perform a role like yours?
I think time management skills are essential – when you manage your time effectively, you can reduce your stress, especially when there are tasks with tight deadlines.
I’d also suggest that everyone should learn good problem-solving skills; that way, when any unexpected issues arise, you can find better solutions to solve the problems.
What do you do when you’re not at work?
I have three kids, so I don’t have much time for tv shows. After a long day at work, I want to share my time with my kids – I want to spend quality time with them and do what they like. Family is very important to me, so I want to balance that time with work.
I take a lot of pride in telling my family about the work I do – it’s important to show my children that if they work hard, there’s a lot of possibility for them, and I love that they’re always proud of me.
