The Internet of Things (IoT) is about more than a dash of automation here and a pinch of mechanization there. It’s about transformations for businesses across the board, enabling companies and individuals to become more responsive, agile, and (ultimately) productive.
Cisco, an IoT leader, recently released an infographic focused on how coming technological advances will lead to changes for three key industries:
- Transportation: Technological improvements are already helping transportation companies monitor their vehicles and the goods they carry. If a truck is shipping produce, intelligent tools can keep an eye on temperature and humidity levels in the cargo area to keep products fresh.
- Utilities: Intuitive technology is quickly becoming the norm for utility companies across the globe. Smart meters, for example, are being used to provide real-time updates on energy consumption and system performance.
- Manufacturing: The biggest changes will perhaps be seen in the manufacturing sector, where advanced automation will make processes more efficient and productive than what would be possible with traditional solutions. In 2015, manufacturers worldwide spent $29 billion investing in IoT technologies. By 2020, that number is expected to soar to $70 billion.
Succeeding in the age of the IoT means anticipating what’s coming—knowing how the IoT will affect your industry, and what your company can do to make the most of it.
